Rare UFO-Like Ice Disk Spotted Spinning on a Frozen Polish River
A rare UFO-shaped ‘ice disk’ has been spotted spinning on the surface of a freezing Polish river.
The slow-revolving circular slab of ice was captured on camera by a resident of the eastern city of Biała Podlaska, as temperatures on the ground plummeted to depths of –12°C.
Poland has been hit by a prolonged cold spell over recent days, which has led to the occurrence of curious ice formations.
Images and videos of the strange sight were met with awe and incredulity on social media.
“Such wonders in Biała Podlaska! Jan Konstanty Staniszewski observed an unusual phenomenon today - a spinning ice disk on the surface of the Krzna River,” wrote Meteolu, a weather service based in the regional capital, Lublin.
The combination of slow-running water and the cold climate offered the perfect conditions for such a formation to occur, reports said.
The phenomenon usually forms on the outer bends of a river, where the accelerating water creates a rotational force.
One of the earliest descriptions of this rare phenomenon was on the Mianus River in New York. It was documented in the 1895 issue of Scientific American magazine.
Meanwhile, in February 2021, a huge ice disk was captured on the Taltson River in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
Experts at the time estimated that it was between 196 and 202 meters wide, and the UFO-like structure was even visible from space.
